Dr. Frédéric R. Santer

Originally from the small country of Luxembourg I moved in 1997 to Innsbruck to pursue my studies in Biology. Soon, I was getting interested in the fields of molecular biology and cancer research and I joined the tumorvirology lab at the Tyrolean Cancer Research Institute for my master thesis. My focus was on the nuclear localization of insulin-like growth factor binding protein (IGFBP)-3, a binding partner of the viral oncoprotein E7. A scholarship from the Ministry of Research of Luxembourg enabled me to continue this work during my PhD studies (2004-2007, PhD Supervisor: Dr. Werner Zwerschke) at the Tyrolean Cancer Research Institute and, later at the Institute for Biomedical Aging Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. After granting of the “Dr. rer. nat.” I applied successfully for a postdoc position in Zoran´s lab and switched the research field from cervical to prostate cancer. My focus was on androgen receptor co-activators with acetyltransferase activity as a possible target for prostate cancer treatment. My more recent projects deal with inhibition of Mcl-1, a prosurvival factor and PARP, a DNA repair enzyme. I am also getting more and more interested in (cancer) stem cells and differentiation processes of the prostatic gland. Zoran was very helpful with promoting my research career which topped recently in the awarding of a big grant from the Austrian Science Fund (FWF). Lately, after years of third-party employments I received a university-paid position as research assistant.

I am not only interested in doing research work: I am probably spending half of my working time for supervision of students, something which is always fun to see how they get enthusiastic as soon as they get the first good results. Currently, I am supervising Zoran´s PhD students Birgit and Florian. Fabian is my first PhD-student who works in my FWF grant. Nicole and Peter, two biotechnologists, come from the Management Center Innsbruck and are doing their Master thesis under my supervision. Gerti, who did her Master thesis in Biology under my supervision, is now helping me to pursue my crazy research ideas! I am particularly proud of Holger, who recently got a postdoc position in Norman Maitland´s lab!

By the way – I am growing a moustache in November – what about you??? www.movember.com
